PARKING LOT SAFETY

Good lighting, emergency telephones and an escort service staffed by police officers have been recognized by the parking industry as significantly effective in achieving parking lot safety. To request an escort, University Police may be contacted at 650-3324. Emergency telephones, located in or near each lot, have two call buttons, one for assistance and one for emergencies. Both types of calls go directly to University Police.

Listed below are additional "common sense" parking lot and driving safety tips:

bulletPark near other vehicles.
bulletPark under/near lights.
bulletDon't occupy more than one space.  You may get retribution from angry fellow motorists as well as parking citations.
bullet Avoid parking next to vans, pick ups and other large vehicles.  These large vehicles can hide your car and make it more difficult for others to observe someone breaking into your automobile.  It also can provide a great hiding place for a would-be thief or attacker.
bullet Always lock your vehicle, close the windows, and lock any valuables or packages in the trunk.
bullet Remember to put your cell phone and briefcase in the trunk, too, unless you are taking them with you.
bullet Do not hide a spare key in or on your car -- it can be found.
bullet Never leave an I.D. tag on your key ring.  If you lose your keys or they are stolen, an I.D. tag can help a thief find you, your car and your house.
bulletAs you approach the car, have your keys ready and check the seats before getting in.
bulletKnow where the emergency phone is located in the area where you normally park.
bulletBe aware. Report suspicious activity immediately to University Police.
bulletReduce the risk of having your vehicle stolen.  An ignition kill switch, various alarms and/or steering wheel bar are great weapons against car theft.

Watch for pedestrians.

Do not cut through empty spaces and lanes.  Be watchful of other motorists who may do this.

Obey pavement directional arrows, crosswalk markings, posted speed limits and "yield" or "stop" signs.

Always drive with your doors locked.

Be suspicious of anyone approaching your vehicle.  Whether they are passing out leaflets or asking for donations, quickly leave the situation.

Drive slowly and use your turn signal

Obey the "Click It or Ticket" Signs.  It's the law.

PEDESTRIAN / CROSSWALK SAFETY

Speed limits on campus range from 10 mph in parking lots to 45 mph on University Drive.

All traffic accidents involving property damage of over $250.00 must be reported immediately to University Police by owners or operators of the vehicles involved.

Truck traffic is not permitted on University roads except for the delivery of goods or services or for official university business. Trucks are defined as commercial type vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weights of 8,000 pounds or more.

State of Illinois citations are issued at the University for moving violations. These citations may not be paid or appealed at Parking Services.

Drivers must yield when a pedestrian enters or is in a marked crosswalk. When a crosswalk covers two lanes of traffic, drivers must wait until pedestrians have cleared the entire crosswalk before proceeding. This applies to crosswalks on University Drive.

Pedestrians should use crosswalks whenever available. When crossing at any place other than a marked crosswalk, pedestrians must give the right-of-way to drivers. Drivers, however, must still be on the alert for pedestrians at all locations. Crosswalk regulations are strictly enforced by University Police.
