MAIL TO CANADA
This is an alert to customers mailing items to Canada.  You must comply with strict addressing and Canadian customs requirements.  Postal items that do not display the complete name spelled out in full and address of both the sender and the recipient in roman letters (A,B,C) and Arabic numerals (1,2,3) are being denied entry into Canada.

According to Canadian officials, this action is pursuant to the Canada Customs Act and reflects heightened security measures.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
Addressee and Sender's MUST be spelled out with full first and last names.  Using "Grandma" or "Uncle" is not acceptable.  Company names are acceptable.

The complete address of the sender, including ZIP code and country of origin, must be shown in the upper left hand corner of the address side of the package, envelope or card.

Addressee to recipients in Canada MUST be printed - preferably in ink or typewritten -- using capital letters.

The last line of the address MUST show only the country name, written in full, and in capital letters.

When a Canadian post delivery zone number is included in the address, mailing requirements allow that number to appear at the last line of the address.

Reminder:  Complete and legible customs declarations, including complete sender and addressee information along with required import documentation, must be provided to specifically identify the contents of any package.

General descriptions such as "gift" or "present" are not acceptable.  For additional information, please contact your local post office.

DOMESTIC MAIL REGULATIONS

All mail must meet these standards:

Thickness—Not less than 0.007 inch thick. Pieces that are 1/4 inch thick or less must be at least 3-1/2 inches high, 5 inches long, and rectangular in shape.

Combined length and girth—Not more than 108 inches.  Parcel Post may not exceed 130 inches.

Weight—Not more than 70 pounds.

Postcard Rate Dimensions:

Minimum: 3-1/2 inches high by 5 inches long by 0.007 inch thick.

Maximum: 4-1/4 inches high by 6 inches long by 0.016 inch thick.

INTERNATIONAL MAIL

All articles of international mail, other than letters, must be identified as to content and must be enclosed in a box, envelope or other covering. Letters must be enclosed in an envelope and marked "AIR MAIL" in the postage area.

Most countries accept Registered Mail, Insured Mail and Express Mail, but there is no Certified Mail to any international locations. Articles sent by Parcel Post require customs forms declaring contents and value. All international mail should be hand carried to the SIUE Branch Post Office.

Addressing

Destination Address

The full address should be typed or legibly written in English and should be placed lengthwise on one side of the item. An address in a foreign language is permitted if the names of the city, province and country are also indicated in English. The last line of the address block area must include only the complete country name (no abbreviations) written in uppercase letters. Following is the order of information for the destination address:

LINE 1: NAME OF ADDRESSEE

LINE 2: STREET ADDRESS OR POST OFFICE BOX NUMBER

LINE 3:  CITY OR TOWN NAME, OTHER PRINCIPAL SUBDIVISION
                (i.e., PROVIDENCE, STATE, COUNTY, etc).

LINE 4:    COUNTRY NAME (UPPERCASE LETTERS IN ENGLISH)

The following are examples of properly formatted delivery addresses:

MS JOYCE BROWNING MR JACQUES MOLIERE
2045 ROYAL ROAD RUE DE CHAMPAIGN
LONDON WIP 6HQ 076570 ST PAUL
ENGLAND FRANCE

Regarding mail to Canada, the location of the country name and postal code are interchangeable; either one may be placed on the last line, with the other placed after the city and provincial name. Following are examples of destination addresses to Canada:

MS HELEN SAUNDERS MS HELEN SAUNDERS
1010 CLEAR STREET 1010 CLEAR STREET
OTTAWA ON K1A OB1 OTTAWA ON CANADA

Sender’s Return Address

The sender’s name and address, including ZIP Code and country of origin, should be shown in the upper left corner of the address side on all mail. This ensures that an undeliverable item can be returned to the sender, if appropriate.

PROPER ADDRESSING

Proper addressing allows mail to be processed quickly and more efficiently. Destination addresses should be in uppercase letters, include no punctuation and be formatted with a uniform left margin. The last line of the address should include only the CITY, STATE and ZIP-CODE.

A return address should always be included in the upper left-hand corner of the mailing piece.
